Walking Sticks, Canes and Crooks (2024)

We try to keep a few of these sticks in stock but it is not always possible, especially at busy times. If we have to make one you may have to wait a few weeks. Average order times are given below but these are average - not guaranteed times

Unless we have them in stock you will need to order a stick and wait for us to make it for you - we show if sticks are in stock below by each type.

We like to use interesting and unusual woods for the handles of the handmade Regency, Derby, Market Stick and Crook types. Typically we would use something from the following list: Elm, Sycamore, Cherry, Walnut, Beech, Alder, Ash, Rosewood and Mahogany - but if we see something we like we will try it. Each of these sticks is handmade, no two are identical. Occasionally we are asked to make a pair of sticks and we can try to make them as similar as possible. We use hazel or chestnut with the bark on, smoothed down and oil-finished so they feel smooth to the touch. The sticks which are not handmade come from a supplier in Scotland and are made in a factory using turned wood for the shanks, usually beech but sometimes other woods. If you want a stick that is more regular in design then choose one of these - but they obviously don't have the unique qualities of a handmade stick and you don't have any choice of materials or finishes.

If you wish to specify a choice of wood for the handle and/or shank then please email first to check availability. Shanks are usually hazel or chestnut for our handmade sticks, Please select the kind of ferrule you need by ticking the appropriate box when ordering. It is possible to have a metal ferrule AND a rubber one to fit over it, just tick both boxes. Brass or nickel silver collars may be fitted on some of our sticks in stock but most are built in during the making processor can be requested when ordering.

We can make sticks for "outsize" people - very tall, very heavy or very short (we often make sticks for children) - if you need to discuss any of this then please do so before ordering - email here

A handle you can really hold!

Designed especially for people who are a bit "unsteady" on their feet, this type of stick is a help for anyone who wants real support. The handle is very stylish and doesn't look as if it came straight from a hospital ward. The Regency has, in fact, become the most popular of all the handle shapes we make. It feels really comfortable and the design of the stick positions the hand and arm directly above (and in line with) the stick shaft, so all your weight is transmitted directly to the ground. There is little or no flexing or wobbling of the shank, as can happen when the handle is offset to one side. If you want to specify types of wood please discuss it first by email.

We try to have a few of these in stock - but it's not always possible - each is still entirely handmade!

The addition of a collar can strengthen the joint between handle and shank and I would recommend you add one to your selection if you will be putting a lot of weight on the stick. If you would like to have a plain or engraved collar fitted, go HERE

Hardwood handle with the nose turned outwards. Can be used short as a walking stick (cane) or long like a hiking stick. A note on correct stick length - stand up as straight as you can and measure from the floor to crease at the wrist joint. This allows the arm to be locked straight when your full weight is applied to the stick. It is best to get help when measuring - if you do it yourself there is a tendency to lower your shoulder as you look down and your stick may then end up too short!
