Am Tag der Zeremonie, an dem das klassische Kalendersystem vom neuen »Universal Century«-System abgelöst wird, hält der Premierminister der Erdföderation auf der Raumstation Laplace[i] eine Rede. Es soll seine letzte sein, denn eine Gruppe von Terroristen verübt einen Anschlag, bei dem nur einer der Attentäter überlebt: Ein junger Mann namens Syam Vist, der ein Behältnis entwendet, das als Laplace-Box[i] bekannt werden soll.

Fast ein Jahrhundert später – es ist das Jahr U.C. 0096 – lebt Banagher Links auf der Weltraumstation Industrial 7 und besucht dort auch eine Universität. Eines Tages begegnet er Audrey Burne, die als blinder Passagier auf einem Raumschiff der regierungsfeindlichen Organisation Sleeves, einem Überbleibsel der Neo-Zeon-Gruppierung, mitgeflogen ist. Audrey bittet Banagher um Hilfe, denn sie will einen drohenden Krieg verhindern und versucht das momentane Oberhaupt der Vist Foundation, Cardeas Vist, zu erreichen, um einen Krieg zu verhindern.

Die Sorge ist keineswegs grundlos, doch ihre Bemühungen kommen zu spät: Während Cardeas und der Anführer von Sleeves um die Übergabe der Laplace-Box verhandeln, greifen Streitkräfte der Erdföderation an und verwandeln die Weltraumstation in ein Schlachtfeld. Inmitten des Chaos findet Banagher einen weißen Gundam mit Horn – den Unicorn Gundam[i], der auch der Schlüssel zur Laplace-Box sein soll. Der Krieg zwischen Erdföderation und Neo Zeon beginnt erneut und Banagher und Audrey befinden sich bereits mittendrin.
